About
Mental Health: Panic Attack and De-escalation - Micro-Course This self-paced micro-course focuses on recognising and responding to a patient experiencing a panic attack, using safe, therapeutic, and culturally appropriate nursing approaches. The course covers the features of panic attacks and anxiety, common triggers, and how to distinguish panic from physical deterioration. You will learn practical de-escalation strategies, therapeutic communication techniques, grounding and breathing exercises, and when pharmacological support may be required. Short teaching videos and realistic practice scenarios allow you to practice calm reassurance, structured communication, and patient-centered explanations within an OSCE-style timeframe. The course emphasises safety, escalation, and the nurse’s role in assessment, intervention, education, and referral. This micro-course is ideal for nursing students, overseas nurses preparing for the NZ OSCE, and registered nurses wanting to build confidence in managing panic attacks and acute anxiety safely and professionally.
